“FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY”
DANCE X VAN DER VELDE
The Bauhaus dance is modern objects and utilitarian art nouveau furniture designed by Henry Van De Velde. The dancer moves gracefully and fluidly, as the objects and furniture transform the body. The dancer manipulates in unique ways, showcasing their functional design and demonstrating their practical use as the legacy of Bauhaus design. Throughout the performance the movements become more dynamic and energetic, incorporating the objects and furniture as the choreography with precision and creativity. Spinning around incorporating its shape and form into the dancer's body, or using a table as costume to create striking visual compositions. The dancer moves effortlessly and seamlessly as one object into another across the stage, utilizing their functionality in movements while maintaining fluidity and grace emphasized through the costume. The dance is a testament to the power of design and its ability to inspire and captivate an audience, while also reflecting the changing cultural and societal values of the time. Spotlights and colored lights create dramatic silhouettes that enhance the visual aesthetics of the body. The lighting design adds an additional layer of artistry to the dance, accentuating the utilitarian beauty of the objects and furniture, and elevating them to works of art.
